Love the list, but “inarguable”?? I beg to differ. First, couch should be #1, followed closely (but not exceeded by) bed at #2. A couch read gives all the comfort, but not as much chance at sleep which, at least for me, puts an end to the whole point of the exercise, which is to *read*. I love the idea of pub reading - never tried but will have to give it a go. But reading in a book store? Come on - isn’t that just “browsing”? Or better still, “shopping”?

Maybe I need to look at how I define “reading”.

But I endorse 100% your comments that plane reading blows (almost oxymoronic) as does the beach read. Give me a deck by a lake or pool any day.

However, I do like reading on the plane even though my neck suffers. I can escape all the flight indignities.

BRILLIANT. I can’t even argue with you. Al thought I did read all of Bunny on a flight to and from New Orleans which was a… choice.

LMAO a choice indeed!!! but a….good one? bunny is excellent, planes are bad, idk it’s tough 😂

At a baseball game as it has plenty of down time. Cricket game (never seen one) probably even better

🙋🏻‍♂️ You’re not alone in the cafe eavesdropping game. In our defense, I feel like people shout the hottest most ridiculous goss up in cafes! I’m not gonna not listen 🤷🏻‍♂️

Sub “in the car”—while waiting for your child’s lesson/practice to end and avoiding small talk with other parents, not while anyone is driving— for commute. Now this list is me, too. While getting a pedicure is number 12. Always seems like it will un-waste the time, but very hard to concentrate!

ohhhh those are both great options! car is very cozy and private i like that! pedicure i agree, can’t actually get focused. thanks for reading, abra!

All in all, I agree. And I back your beach ranking 100% and maybe would have even swapped it with the plane. I also really miss reading on my commute in Boston. Maybe I would swap couch and bar because finding parking and paying $16 for a cool cocktail (plus the whole agoraphobia thing) really places a lot of barriers between me, my book, and a bar, ya feel? But top two are 🤌

Best nugget in this Substack: Reese Witherspoon's caption. Can't.

omg i feel you so hard—- all great arguments!!! bar really has to be the perfect conditions to work. beach is flat out bad. so glad you caught the reese caption 😂😂

I have zero complaints about this list.

Well it’s hard for me to comment when I’m so offended by the reading on the couch section….hurtful. Love Mom

Outside is #1 for me. Been reading on my grandmother’s veranda for two weeks now and it’s soo comfy 🥰 and I’m amazed at anyone who can read on the plane. Two minutes in and either my motion sickness acts up or I take a nap

okay fun! your bottom three are potentially my top three, but judging from the comments i'm a psycho for that lmao

during the commute is also peak, porch is hard to beat, and also may i put forth as an addendum to "at a bar"--or just more specifically, at the bar at a restaurant where you're dining alone. it's the moment!
